State 2013 Final Medal Round Results

The final round at the 2013 MSHSL State Wrestling Tournament has come and gone. The two remaining wrestlers, Ryan Tipcke and Kyle Drehmel, finished up a great season at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday evening.

At 126 pounds, Kyle Drehmel wrestled for 3rd place against Tyler Keller of Medford. Keller scored first on a low single leg, and led into the second period with a 2-1 advantage. Kyle scored reversal points after starting down, but Keller got away to tie it at 3 all going into the final period. With his turn to start down, Keller got away and added a takedown. Kyle quickly got away, but couldn’t finish his own takedown as time expired, dropping the match 6-4.

Kyle Drehmel finished his career as the 2013 Class A 4th place finisher at 126 pounds! With a 38-8 season record, Kyle finished his career with 147 career wins, leaving him at 5th place on Goodhue’s career wins list! (See all-time career win list under the “History” link and click on “75+ Career Wins”.) Congratulations Kyle on an outstanding career with Goodhue Wrestling!

Ryan Tipcke competed in his final career match on Saturday evening as well. At 220 pounds, Ryan showed his balance and stamina against his big opponents. After a scoreless first period against Kyle Johnson of Barnesville, Ryan scored quickly off the mat with a one point escape. Aggressively looking for the takedown, Ryan picked up a second point in the period on a second stalling call. Still staying aggressive in the third period, Ryan’s opponent got away from underneath but couldn’t score a takedown, leaving Ryan getting his hand raised by the referee in his final match at the Xcel Energy Center. Ryan finished his senior season with a record of 38-9.

Individual Sections Update

Well we have come to the final rounds of Section 1 Individual Wrestling.

We brought 13 Goodhue wrestlers down for this great event. 10 survived a brutal first couple of rounds. Riley, Zach and Garett gave great efforts but fell just short of getting to day two-the medal rounds. All are underclass men and will be back next year.

8 entered the semifinals this morning. 4 survived this blood round. Finalists are Joel Gadient at 113, who upset the tree and two seed both by pin to get there. Kyle Drehmel got revenge on two season losses to AJ Riley, getting the takedown in OT. Jacob Blattner at 160 also overcame a regular season loss to win at the last second in dramatic fashion. And finally, Ryan Tipcke got the second period pin in his semi to punch his ticket to the finals.

5th place matches will start shortly. The Breuer and Dahling brothers will all try to finish a great season with 5th place honors.

After the 4:45 Parade of Champions, Bailee will go for 3rd at 106, along with Matthew Lexvold at 120.

The Goodhue varsity team just finished up at the Park Cottage Grove Duals. The team went 1-3, falling to Chatfield, Kimball, and Stillwater before ending the day with our second dual win of the season by edging Tartan 42-40. All three losses came to ranked or honorable mention teams, according to the latest Guillotine rankings that came out Friday.

Here are the box scores:

Goodhue 21 Chatfield 51
Goodhue 31 Kimball 39
Goodhue 31 Stillwater 41
Goodhue 42 Tartan 40

Some of our individuals deserve some special recognition. 7th grader Mason Huemann earned his first Varsity win of his career. And senior Mitchell Breuer went 4-0 on the day as he knocked out his 99th career win. You can be confident Mitchell will be pushing hard to pick up his 100th next Friday at the Chisago Lakes Invite!

Logan Breuer easily gets the Match of The Day Award. Against Tartan, Logan was down 11-0 when he put his opponent to his back and pinned him with :03 seconds left in the period! Way to go Logan!
